7/6/2023 0 Comments Truman david mccullough reviewThe last president to serve as a living link between the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, Truman’s story spans the raw world of the Missouri frontier, World War I, the powerful Pendergast machine of Kansas City, the legendary Whistle-Stop Campaign of 1948, and the decisions to drop the atomic bomb, confront Stalin at Potsdam, send troops to Korea, and fire General MacArthur. In this riveting biography, acclaimed historian David McCullough not only captures the man-a more complex, informed, and determined man than ever before imagined-but also the turbulent times in which he rose, boldly, to meet unprecedented challenges. Truman is one of the greatest of American stories, filled with vivid characters-Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin, Eleanor Roosevelt, Bess Wallace Truman, George Marshall, Joe McCarthy, and Dean Acheson-and dramatic events. Truman, whose presidency included momentous events from the atomic bombing of Japan to the outbreak of the Cold War and the Korean War, told by America’s beloved and distinguished historian. The Pulitzer Prize–winning biography of Harry S.

We are encouraged to believe this person is a real historical figure. “Miss Rumphius” is an example of a story-within-a-story, and opens with the great-niece telling the story of her great-aunt. This gives a story an epic feel, and we sense we’re reading something important. Stories set over a short period are often wonderful, but “Miss Rumphius” stands apart because this particular home-away-home story takes place over an entire lifetime. The child or child-proxy learns something like how to be brave, to not to be afraid of monsters, or perhaps the outing is purely carnivalesque. Many picture books are about a character who leaves home, has an adventure then returns having changed a little, but most of these adventures take place over a single 12 hour day. Miss Rumphius was inspired by the real life “Lupine Lady,” Hilda Hamlin, who spread lupine seeds along the Maine coast, as well as Cooney’s own experiences traveling the world. Miss Rumphius is a classic home-away-home picture book. In a picture book about a journey there will probably be beautiful illustrations of a road. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Deosil by Jordan L. HawkI give props to the way elements from right across the series coalesced in the final fight for survival, but at the same time so many details of the magical lore and the histories of the various creatures and the bad guys (particularly regarding their motivations and abilities) kind of went in one ear and out the other. I appreciated the non-stop action and the high-stakes drama of it all, but if I’m being honest, I also came away from this with a heavy sense of disappointment - over what exactly, I’m not precisely sure. The mood is tense and my nerves were frayed before long, but my trust in Whyborne and Griffin and their wonderful friends was enough to get me through unscathed. The story kicks off with a bang and never really lets up until the dust settles over Widdershins once and for all. returning home from their dangerous crusade, having saved the surviving Endicott’s in a brutal standoff at Balefire Manor, only to discover that Widdershins has fallen to the Fideles in their absence.Ī race against time to save loved ones and to stop the masters from returning to overpower humanity becomes the ultimate name of game here. This final instalment hits the ground running, with Whyborne and co. Seven years, eleven novels and a handful of short stories later, we finally reach the closing chapter of this much beloved M/M series. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Jack pumpkinhead wizard of ozEven with the help of Belfaygor of Bourne, with his beard cursed to rapid growth, and Snif the Iffin, a griffin who has lost his grr, their efforts seem in vain. And one of the big kind of themes that we talk about is her book, Rage Becomes Her: The Power of Women's Anger, So yeah, I got to sit down with the incredible Soraya Chemaly who is an award winning author, activist. Right, this is as much a surprise for you as it is for our guests. And the conversation could have gone a million different directions. And this one is what I'm particularly excited about, because the research was fascinating. And so we go into these recordings, these intro recordings, so curious and truly kind of blind to how the episode went. But then whoever is carrying on the interview doesn't really disclose much to either Sabrina or myself, the other co host. We are back for another incredible episode and an incredible conversation with someone I'm so excited to tell you about.Īnd I just have to say I want to give our audience a kind of a glimpse behind the scenes, the way that we've been doing all of this production, you guys is that, generally I lead kind of the pre production research, and I prep the interview guide. 7/5/2023 0 Comments Brian k vaughan booksThroughout the series are women, alone and in groups, finding new solutions for the problems they’ve never faced alone before. The sudden removal of the power and control that men have over women’s lives leaves a power void that women must learn how to respond to, and they do so in a realistically varied manner. As pointed out before the start of issue two, 85% of all government representatives, 495 of the Fortune 500 CEOs and almost 100% of the leaders of certain religions are (were) men. Overall, this is a story that talks about power dynamics between different groups of people. It’s a grand romp of an adventure and at the same time an interesting look into gender politics in modern civilization. Along the way to discover why all the men have died and hopefully reverse the damage, Yorick encounters all sorts of women: secret agents, ninjas, Amazons, the Israeli army, and more. However, his new role as the last living male makes him uniquely important to the human race, and imposes greater priorities on his life. After a mysterious event kills every other male creature on the planet, Yorick’s only goal is to be reunited with his girlfriend who was travelling in Australia when the disaster struck. Y: The L ast Man is the story of Yorick Brown, a young and somewhat directionless amateur escape artist living in New York City with his trained chimpanzee, Ampersand. Pushing my glasses up the bridge of my nose with my left index finger, I lowered my right hand so that the cabinet could hide the middle finger I aimed right at Aiden. The fact that I didn’t immediately respond probably made him add, with that same facial expression aimed right at me, “I don’t care what you have to tell them. You still loved her, you just wanted to sock her right in the baby-maker to teach her a lesson-not that I knew from experience or anything. Like having a sister who you wanted to punch right in the ovaries. Which basically showed how amazing the human mind was how you could care about someone but want to slit his or her throat at the same time. Cancel it,” he repeated as if I’d gone deaf the first time he’d said it. The man in question, who was on the verge of either a bloody, imaginary death or a carefully crafted one that involved dish soap, his food, and a long period of time, made a noise from behind the bowl of quinoa salad in front of him, which was big enough to feed a family of four. It’s what my mom used to do to us when we were little and would pout. When the edges of his mouth turned down, got tight, and his brown eyes went heavy lidded, all it made me want to do was stick my finger up his nose. Grumbling only got me the look-that infamous, condescending expression that had gotten Aiden into more than one fight in the past. “Aiden,” I grumbled, even though I knew better. One day long after I quit, so no one would suspect me. Her Alaskan Groom by Kate BridgesMidwife Sophie Grant had hoped marrying John Colburne would be easy as pie.
